Stop Mildew Growth on Your Vinyl Deck: 3 Easy Steps

Water, Mold Damage Treatment | Mold Remediation, Rancho CucamongaDo you have a vinyl deck? If so, you are most likely familiar with the serious issue of mildew. Regardless of how well you take care of your deck mildew can pop up suddenly and be difficult to remove. Even when you do get rid of mildew, it always seems to come back. How do you get rid of this issue once and for all? The good news is that you can take care of the problem with inexpensive household items. Get rid of the mildew for good with the following steps:

1. Set up. The only items that you need are vinegar, bleach and a sponge. Take the vinegar and the sponge and bring them to a space outside where you can work safely. Add a small amount of vinegar to the sponge.

2. Apply vinegar. Apply the vinegar soaked sponge to the deck and let it sit for several minutes. Wipe the deck clean with the sponge. Typically this method is adequate for removing mildew and mildew staining but you can repeat it as needed. If you still have mildew and staining, re-apply vinegar and let it sit for a full hour before wiping the deck with the sponge. You can repeat this treatment on a weekly basis if needed.

3. Apply bleach. If vinegar does not get rid of the mildew, try bleach. Make sure that you wear gloves and avoid breathing in the fumes to avoid the toxic effects of bleach. Soak a sponge with bleach, apply it to the deck and let it sit for several minutes before wiping it off. Watch for the mildew to turn white which means that it is dead. After the mildew is dead, clean the deck with soap and water to wipe out any remaining traces.
